St. John Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy
Course Description
Integrating the Bach Flower Essences
In 1919, Edward Bach, a brilliant young pioneering Welsh physician, made the first breakthrough advances in psychosomatic medicine when he started treating his patient’s mind-states and moods to resolve diagnosed physical illnesses. Today in medicine it’s an accepted fact that a person’s mental and emotional states play a role in the creation of physical disease and pain.
Based upon extensive research at the Bach Centre in Mt. Vernon, England into Bach’s original work on Personality Typology and Flower Essences, pain relief specialist Paul St. John will share with you how to integrate these wonderful tools into your practice. The Bach Typology and Flower Essences have become a key component in Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy, Paul St. John’s new system of manual soft tissue manipulation for postural and emotional balance.
You will be introduced to the 38 Bach Flower Essences, the history of their development, and the corresponding personality traits, moods and behaviors. You will be taught how to properly investigate the sources of emotional imbalance and how to address them using the Essences. Attendees of the class will learn interviewing skills using a sublime system of personality typology in a nonjudgmental, safe environment.
Somatic Level Courses
Posturology 101 (Prerequisite for Somatic Level Certification)
For several decades, Paul St. John and his colleagues have been studying posture; how the components of the human body affect posture, and how posture reflects the function of those components. This developing area has come to be known as Posturology, the science of human balance in every physiological condition. Research from Europe dating back to the days of Galileo to the present is included, along with Paul St. John’s extensive research, in this exciting new direction in pain relief therapy.
In Posturology 101, pain relief specialist Paul St. John will guide you through the centuries from the earliest recorded studies of posture and imbalance to his most recent findings in his practice. He will share areas of pain causing dysfunctions that create imbalance. This application is the primary component in Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy.
Our goal is to have you leave the course competent in the basic concepts and enlighten you on the importance of being able to measure and document posture accurately. Several examples of postural distortions will be given with their causes and subsequent treatment methods to allow you to understand the impact of this exciting new area of study. As an Integrative Neurosomatic Therapist your capacity to help patients in pain starts with your ability to measure, document, and interpret posture. This course is the first step in the journey to helping your clients heal fully.
Integrative Approaches to Low Back Pain – S1
This course, the first of four specialized courses on the road to certification, focuses on the low back and pelvis. Paul St. John and his colleagues have developed this course based upon extensive research and clinical study. Once you have taken Posturology 101 and have learned to analyze and chart dysfunctional postural patterns, you will begin the steps needed for Level 1 certification in Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy.
Integrative Approaches to Low Back Pain isolates 15 muscle groups effecting the low back by the origin, insertion and function of each individual muscle. You will be taught the answers to “Why do we treat?, a section of the manual that details possible pain causing dysfunctions and how they affect other functions of the body. Trigger points will be identified in each area along with associated patient symptoms. Paul St. John will share with you specific treatment for each area in a step by step – hands on manner. You will be able to implement the most effective treatment methods in your own practice after one weekend .
Throughout the course, each muscle group section will include specific stretches and strengthening exercises for your patients to practice between treatments and subsequently, after treatments conclude. These are designed to fully benefit the particular area of treatment for a pain free patient.
Integrative Approaches to Cervical Pain – S2
The second course in the certification process, Integrative Approaches to Cervical Pain, identifies 9 areas where dysfunction will impact posture as well as body functions. These areas are defined by origin, insertion and function. You will learn specifics in “Why do we treat?” , a section of your manual which details possible pain causing dysfunctions and how they affect other functions of the body. Trigger points are identified in each area along with associated patient symptoms. Paul St. John will share with you specific treatment for each area in a step by step – hands on manner. You will be able to implement the most effective treatment methods in your own practice after one weekend with Neurosomatic Educators.
Specific treatment methods are carefully explained and demonstrated to enable you, the therapist, to apply these techniques successfully in your own practice. Your patients will experience relief from such maladies as headaches, balance problems, TMJ dysfunction, upper back pain, and from traumas such as whiplash. Paul will share case studies from his own practice spanning several decades along with extensive research in this area.
Specialized stretches and strengthening exercises will be a part of each section of this course. You will learn to educate your patients in these exercises for prolonged pain free health.
Integrative Approaches to Shoulder Pain – S3
Third in the Level 1 Certification series, Integrative Approaches to Shoulder Pain introduces you to ground breaking new techniques in shoulder pain relief. Paul St. John has treated thousands of cases and now will share with you his studies. He has developed these techniques by studying each muscle and muscle group, identifying dysfunctions and treating imbalances. You will learn why we treat these muscles and how to achieve pain relief for your patients through the most effective treatment methods available today.
You will explore specific causes of pain as they are explained throughout this course while Paul and his colleagues demonstrate techniques. Over the course of the weekend you will learn how to identify trigger points and where they refer, and how shoulder dysfunctions affect other body functions.
As with previous levels, specific stretch and strengthening exercises are explained for you to educate your patients with. By implementing these techniques in your private practice you enable your patients to live pain free.
Integrative Approaches to Extremity Pain – S4
The last in the Level 1 Certification series, this course is focused on strategies for eliminating soft tissue pain of the extremities. Calling on experiences from almost thirty years of practice, Paul St. John has developed manual therapy strategies to help you to learn causes of nerve entrapment syndromes, as well as strategies for treatment of such conditions including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Tibial Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.
A review of the specific anatomy of each extremity will enhance your palpatory and treatment skills to a degree where you will be able to isolate nerve entrapments, trigger points, and other ischemic areas. Demonstration of techniques from Paul St. John and his colleagues will facilitate your understanding of the techniques and purposes for them. The result will be more effective treatment strategies and an unprecedented level of success with your clients that you will be able to implement the very next day!
The specific stretching and self care protocols that are included will enhance your practice and credibility by empowering your clientele in managing their own health and well being.
Neurosomatic Level Courses
Posturology 202
In Posturology 101, you learned basic concepts of the components that make up the righting reflexes, and how to measure and document posture accurately. Posturology 202 is a continuation of the journey which investigates the effects of craniofacial asymmetry, the effect of the eyes, and the effect of poor gait on posture.
In looking at the body from a dynamic perspective, you will learn to assess gait, identify some common gait pattern anomalies, and you will be introduced to facilitative movement therapy that will help your patients to improve their functional movement patterns on the path to becoming pain free.
By reviewing the concept of the Lovett reactor, you will understand how craniofacial asymmetry may be the cause of, or the result of, postural imbalances. You will also review the effects on the structure and function of the organs contained with the cranial vault, and how dysfunction of these organs may result.
You will learn the anatomy of the musculature of the eyes, and review the cranial nerves that control the eyes and how they affect posture. You will also learn how to relieve tension patterns in these muscles, seeing the real effects of this primary input into the righting reflex system.
Integrative Visceral Balancing- N1
In the first course on the path of the Certified Neuro-Therapist Track, you will be introduced to the effect of the visceral system, the many organs involved, and how they can create postural distortions. A systematic approach to palpation and massage of the organs will be reviewed, all the while, considering their potential effect on the musculoskeletal system through the righting reflexes. Through years of investigation, Paul St. John has developed an understanding of the viscera, how they are affected by trauma, illness, hormonal insufficiency, and poor biomechanics. You will learn how postural distortion can cause dysfunction of the viscera (“function follows form”), and how disease of an organ can cause postural distortion (“form follows function”). You will learn how trigger points in the bladder can mimic symptoms of sciatica, how the kidney can cause lumbago, how the lung can cause symptoms of shoulder bursitis, and how even the liver may be the source of symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction.
Integrative Craniofacial Balancing - N2
Craniofacial asymmetry is among of the most common causes of scoliosis, headaches, and TMJ Dysfunction. In Posturology 202 you learned how to measure the craniofacial asymmetries. In this course you will learn how to facilitate the correction of imbalances in the cranium, and you will be able to facilitate your patient’s return to structural homeostasis, thus creating a physical environment in which healing can take place. By integrating the Lovett reactor relationship, one can rapidly improve craniofacial and pelvic imbalances such as a flexion distortion or obliquity, especially if the genesis of these is in the cranium. You will also learn how to direct additional therapists to create a team centered approach.
Integrative Balancing of the TMJ - N3
The integrative approach to TMJ Dysfunction will allow the therapist to normalize the soft tissues of the TMJ and related structures. Techniques are not limited to the TMJ though. Benefits are numerous to those with speech pathologies, swallowing difficulties, and pain due to trauma of the face. In continuing to understand the complex issues of head and TMJ pain, you will learn how to increase range of motion, detect muscular imbalances that lead to clicking and popping of the joint and correct them, and to decrease pain associated with these two problems. You will learn the mechanics of the TMJ, and how the Lovett Reactor Relationship is key to understanding dysfunction of the joint, or how the joint can be the cause of cervical pain or even pelvic imbalances.
Integrative Balancing of the Atlas-Axis - N4
Vital structures are contained within the upper cervical spine. The cervical spine protects the seven cranial nerves that emanate from the brainstem, the intrusion upon which are often the cause of numerous neurological symptoms and conditions. It also protects important portions of the circulatory system to the brain. You will learn the importance of these structures, how they can be affected by imbalances in the cervical spine, and how to correct those imbalances.
